Rundance is a movement developed by Penny A and Usha M. It combines running and dancing, moving with the energy of a run but the spirit of a dance. Random acts of rhythm become the short bursts and spontaneous moments where the dance enters the travelling... perhaps hopping, skipping, turning, leaping…
It’s most fun in company as you can play off one another and enjoy elements of surprise and connection. Those feeling brave can go solo and enjoy surprising themselves and passers by! It can be done in response to music, to each other and our surroundings. It changes the linear nature of a run, brings expression, lightness and almost always 'lafter' and smiles…A rundance can also vary in pace depending on our abilities, energy levels and how we feel moment by moment. It can easily become a walk-dance or a shuffle-dance or a sit-down-dance.
This is Usha and Penny's first collaboration as artists. They share a love for communication and connection, running, dancing and film making. They also bring different personal energies and experience to the project. As they experiment they are constantly discovering new layers, particular those that touch our sense of well being.
Rundancing allows a freedom for self expression in a world where people are often afraid to simply be themselves. World mental health day felt like the perfect time to celebrate our differences by rundancing in the streets of Nottingham. Mental health is perhaps one of the last aspects of difference that people feel frightened by or scared to reveal in case they will be judged on. In truth most people have personal challenges to overcome or have experienced feeling uncomfortable in their own skin at some point in their lives.
We feel rundancing offers an opportunity to celebrate our individuality, our uniqueness as well as allowing more spontaneity to breathe into our lives and nurture our well being.
